Tom Rogic’s injury is not severe
As per the latest reports, Melbourne Victory midfielder Tom Ragic's ankle injury is not severe as heard before.
Attacking ace Rogic has been ruled out of Wednesday’s Asian Champions League opener away to Chinese giants Guangzhou Evergrande through injury but Melbourne Victory is confident he will be fit for Saturday’s derby against Melbourne Heart.
Rogic rolled his right ankle in almost comical circumstances on Saturday night when he inadvertently stepped on the foot of teammate Leigh Broxham in the 50th minute of Melbourne Victory’s thrilling 4-3 win over Adelaide United on Saturday night at AAMI Park.

While Rogic’s injury is not as bad as what images of the hyperextension suggest, scans on Saturday confirmed that the Socceroo suffered a lateral ankle sprain and will not travel with the squad to China on Monday.
Victory is confident he will be fit to line up in Saturday’s derby against Melbourne Heart, although Socceroos boss Ange Postecoglou will also be nervous ahead of the Ecuador friendly in London on March 5.
“I don’t know the full extent, he did go over his ankle. I’m optimistic like always he’ll be okay and it’s not too bad, but I said that about Adrian Leijer so we’ll have to wait and see,’’ Muscat said on Saturday night.
“I’m optimistic (about Guangzhou), the game’s four days away. Look it didn’t look too great when he was coming off, he couldn’t bear much weight but we’ve got a very competent medical staff and if there’s any chance of him being available he will because they’ll get him right.
“You can take 19 players, there’s nothing in the rules that stops us taking him. We won’t take any silly risks but if there’s a possibility that he could be fit he’ll be travelling.’’
Leigh Broxham was immense in midfield while Gui Finkler sizzled in attack, scoring a brace with Archie Thompson and Kosta Barbarouses netting one apiece in Victory’s win.
It lifts Victory above Adelaide and into third place on 30 points while United drops to fifth on 27 despite Sergio Cirio’s hat-trick.
Finkler brushed off the disappointment of missing out on Victory’s Asian Champions League squad and while he’ll be fresh for Heart, Chilean Pablo Contreras will miss after picking up his eighth booking of the season.
But Muscat was pleased with his team’s renewed belief having conceded consecutive 5-0 losses only a month ago.
“It’s the third week in a row we’ve come from behind. The boys showed a great deal of belief tonight and executed what was asked of them the majority of the time,’’ he said.
“Great game of football, I would’ve liked it a little easier in the last five minutes at 4-2 we were still creating chances and another finishes it off.
“We haven’t turned the corner, there’s a lot of work to be done. I asked the players before the game to build on last week’s performance.’’
Adelaide coach Josep Gombau said he was satisfied with his team but conceded errors cost them.
“I’m satisfied with the work my players did, normally when you score three goals away you win but today we made some mistakes and we lost the game,’’ Gombau said.
“The mistakes come from our style. But this happens because even Barcelona that is playing with this style make these kind of mistakes, because when you play from the back you take these risks.’’
